Description: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is a regional union or community which includes eight East African countries. 
Summary:

IGAD’s role is to enhance regional cooperation in three priority areas of food security and environmental protection, economic cooperation, regional integration and social development, peace and security.

Issue areas covered:

IGAD validated a Regional AW Strategy (RAWS) and Action Plan in August 2016. 

Work is now underway to develop National AW Strategies (NAWS) to implement the RAWS.

  • IGAD is open to collaboration with APOs.
Advocacy Opportunities:
  • The RAWS provides an opportunity to monitor and advocate on implementation.
  • There is also significant scope for implementation support.
  • The development of NAWS and national implementation also provide advocacy opportunities. International APOs could support national APOs in this regard.
