Future Timetable

PrepCom2 will take place in New York, USA, from 28/1 - 8/2 2002

PrepCom3 25/3-5/4 2002 New York, USA

PrepCom4 27/5-7/6 2002 Bali, Indonesia

World Summit, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2-11 September 2002

PrepCom2 meeting reviews and assesses progress regarding implementation of Agenda 21. To do this a report has to be prepared by the Secretariat, which includes action by 'major groups'. If we want to highlight the role of civil society etc. then it has to be in this report. Need to send ideas to CSD Secretariat by September 2001 for consideration.

The Secretary General will consider 'crucial issues', but a good case would need to be made for consideration.

PrepCom3 considers paper from PrepCom2 and 'other inputs'. But not clear what 'other inputs' would be entertained at this stage.

PrepCom4 prepares the document that will be considered at the Summit.

The Summit will be mainly governmental. There will be a couple of multi-stakeholder events, but interventions will be mainly cosmetic. Demos may be able to influence a little, but will not affect the main message.

NGOs major work will be done by November 2001.

Advice is that NGO input has to cover so many diverse areas, with so many stakeholders, that it is difficult to have messages heard. Major themes (cross-cutting) are more likely to succeed.

NGOs can contact national governments to ask them to include their themes too.

At European level: -

In June Ministers of the Environment Council will prepare the EU input for the European regional meeting in September. The European Council will take place in Göteborg, Sweden, on 15-16 June.

Conference on Europe's Way to the World Summit on Sustainable Development 12-14 June Gothenburg. Organised by Friends of the Earth, Europe (and other NGOs), but high-level participation. Importance of EU

The role of the EU in Rio+10 is extremely important. The US has blown any remaining environmental credibility (and is seen to be 'inward looking') and the EU is left as a major regional grouping with good environmental credentials.
